A pip is a standard unit used to describe small changes in a forex exchange rate.

For most currency pairs, one pip is a move in the fourth decimal place, or 0.0001.

Japanese yen pairs are a common exception, where one pip is usually a move in the second decimal place, or 0.01.

The cash value of that movement changes with the currency pair, position size, account currency, and current exchange rate.

Knowing the pip value helps you translate a stop loss in pips into an estimated amount of money at risk.
